Excavations on Despotiko have uncovered an important sanctuary and archaic statues

This year’s excavations at Mantra on the little island of Despotiko lasted from 2 June to 8 July. Since 2001 excavations here under archaeologist Yiannos Kourayios of the 11th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities have been uncovering an extensive archaic sanctuary dedicated to the god Apollo. This year’s excavation was conducted by archaeologists Kornelia Daifa, Spyros Petropoulos and Thanasis Garonis, assisted by students from the University of Perugia. Work continued for the second year on studies of the architectural material of the twelve structures uncovered, under the supervision of the architect and professor at Munich Polytechnic, Dr. Aenne Ohnesorg, and Dr. Katerina Papayianni.

The work was carried out with the help of funding from the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Foundation.
